Icebird (rjd2 And Aaron Livingston) Announce New Album, The Abandoned Lullaby

rjd2 and Aaron Livingston have formed the duo Icebird, and together, the prolific producer and talented singer are excited to announce their debut album, The Abandoned Lullaby, which will be released October 11th on rjd2's own label, RJ's Electrical Connections.

For rjd2, Icebird is the next step in a 10-year career that has seen him grow from heralded crate digger to celebrated instrumentalist and songwriter, composing the theme music for Mad Men and TNT's Inside The NBA, while releasing albums like The Third Hand and Colossus. With The Abandoned Lullaby, rj is expanding his repertoire, by stepping back. "I went into The Abandoned Lullaby knowing my role exactly," explains rj. "Both the engineering and producing – I was able to focus on both here totally, more than almost anything I've done before."

And it's because of Livingston that rj feels so comfortable in this new role. Livingston brings his own history to the table, taking part in the Black Lily jam sessions that birthed the careers of Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild and being featured on The Roots' fan-favorite "Guns Are Drawn." The two first collaborated on "Crumbs Off The Table" from rj's Colossus album, and the resulting track had the two itching to work together again. "It was so exciting to see what Aaron would do with the songs," says rjd2. "He really is super clever as a writer."

Much of that cleverness is on display with "Going And Going. And Going," the album's lead single. rj's upbeat, snare- and guitar-heavy beat paves the way for Livingston's gritty, soulful vocals. "Language is always a code, and I wanted to use that idea to expand the range of what I can sing and say," explains Livingston, whose unique style shines through with lines like, "Forget your problems mama/ I'm the Dalai Lama up in here."

Sonically, "Going And Going. And Going" only touches on the musical diversity of The Abandoned Lullaby, which pulls from the duo's interest in creating art that mirrors life. "Stories about fabricated heroic shit don't interest me as much as something like a half-written lullaby," remarks rj. "I have an interest in art that portrays real world issues, that portrays the dichotomies of a 'balanced' human experience." The Abandoned Lullaby displays that balance throughout, making it easier for the duo to explore new artistic freedoms. "This is the first time I've had someone else at the controls for an entire project," explains Livingston. "It gave me room to really explore my voice – and what I can say with it."

The unpredictable and highly entertaining rapper Dirt Nasty and Grammy award winning producer Jack Splash have teamed up to form a new group called CHAINSWANGAZ. The group was formed out of a mutual love of hip hop, humor, all things nasty and a reverence for Rick Rubin, Too Short and 2 Live Crew. The duo called in said idols Too Short and 2 Live Crew to collaborate in the studio along with Warren G and made a hilariously wrong and impressively skillful EP and five videos.

The first single 'Steak And Mash Potatoes' features Brother Marquis of 2 Live Crew and the video features Charlie Sheen in his first ever music video appearance. Dirt says of Charlie's involvement in the project, "For some strange reason Charlie actually loves the music we're making and thinks I'm a good rapper." Jack Splash explains the impetus for the project as "My favorite producer is Rick Rubin and Dirt grew up in Oakland listening to Too Short and 2 Live Crew, so we decided to put those worlds together and do some brand new filthy shit and have some fun".

Chainswangaz will be releasing their first EP titled 'EXTENDED PACKAGE' for free download to all of their fans via their website on September 8th

Dinner At The Thompson's, the French-American duo of songstress Lucille Tee and producer/multi-instrumentalist Fablive, is excited to release "It All Began," the latest single from their forthcoming sophomore album, "Off The Grid," which will be released on May 17th via Earth At Work Records. Rhymesayers has announced the signing and release of Hail Mary Mallon's debut record, Are You Gonna Eat That? for digital release on May 3^rd, 2011 and physical CD and double colored, etched vinyl on June 7^th 2011. The trio comprised of Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz will premiere tracks from the upcoming record this April and May while on tour with Kimya Dawson. With the Lion Heart EP nearing completion and the full length LP To Whom It May Concern slotted for release later this year, to say the Vallejo, CA representative Moe Green is keeping busy is an understatement. More fittingly, Green is swimming in a sea of ambition trying to keep his head above water. Hence the reason the young emcee felt the urge to remix “Swim Good,” a song from Frank Ocean’s recently released Nostalgia, Ultra album. “Man, the original was so powerful because to me it sounded like he was facing some problems that he wasn’t ready to handle” say’s Green on why he picked the track to remix. “I been through that and am still in that position in life.”

Paris creative agency La MJC and colette got together with New Balance to create the “Vivre Sans Temps Mort” 1500 sneaker. The slogan used for the sneaker is one of the core slogans of the agency since the very beginning and describes a state of mind that is restless. The upper of the sneaker comes in a nice red/white/grey combination, using lots of premium leathers and mesh. Produced in the Flimby factory in the UK, the sneakers will be released at colette and in the Cool Cats online store December 18th.

For a while there it was very much the icon of New Balance within sneaker culture, since it's spawned numerous other colabs in Japan and around the world. Sad to say the New Balance USA versions have never lived up to their international counterparts or my own expectations. But I still love this Hectic X Mita X New Balance MT580 series. New Balance MT580 Gore-Tex

I have to admit that the MT580 has lost some of it's luster over the last few years for me. That has little to do with a quality release like this one and everything to do with the inept and downright cheap approach that New Balance USA has taken to marketing it's wide releases. Bad design, lame colorways and all around cheaply manufactured materials have marred what had once been New Balance's premier Sneakerhead silhouette. And yes, I am talking about the initial American rollout of the MT580 in the states. They fucked it up big time! So much so that I know of more than one New Balance shop that simply chose to stop carrying anything other than technical runners and cross trainers from their own brand! Here's hoping that going forward in 2011 New Balance can regain some of that quality and bring the MT580 back stronger than ever.

An internationally popular model in the New Balance stable of sneakers, the MT580 Gore-Tex shoe has earned its following over the years, and this new Gore-Tex model is sure to continue that trend. A mix of solid and perforated leather on the uppers and a natural gum-rubber sole (I love gum soled shoes!!) with contrasting linings, this shoe has a lot going on.

The 1 minute 19 second banger will appear on the forthcoming October 12th, 7" only release of the bands' 1st EP, which comes with a limited edition Raymond Pettibon print. The 1st EP along with 12 additional tracks comprise the full length debut, First Four EPs, out November 23rd digitally and as a four 7" boxset.
I love the artwork from Pettibon. Takes me right back to the old Black Flag album covers. Awesome!

ESQ & Chikaramanga drop "The Succession" LP on Tres Records

A new jewel just dropped into my mailbox today and I had to post up about it. Let me start off by saying that for my money the most consistent hip hop label in the game today and for the past 5 years or more has been Tres Records. People Under The Stairs, Giant Panda, Shawn Jackson, Paten Locke, C.R.A.C., are just a few of the artists that have called Tres Records home. All the artists on the label are united by one thing: a commitment "to procuring the hip-hop aesthetic while exploring the infinite possibilities of the sampling tradition."
But enough about the label, Let's talk about the new record! ESQ & Chikaramanga are dropping "The Succession." Set for a September 14th release, the album is a collaboration between two like minded hip hop cats. Both tend to keep it dusty and not digital. Vinyl samples, stacks of rhyme books, and the SP-12 are in full effect on "The Succession." This record is for every hip hop cat that I hear complain about music not sounding like it used to "back in the day" (this usually means the early 90's w/ tribe called quest, gangstarr, de la soul, pharcyde etc). ESQ & Chikaramanga are on a mission to prove that "Boom Bap" is still alive and well 20 years later. The cuts are sharp, the lyrics swift, and the beats bang. I don't need much more hahaha. If you get this record and your neck doesn't start snappin' then I'm pretty sure you don't like hip hop. "Cosmic Mellow" is my top track right now but this album is so deeply layered that that could change from one moment to the next.

Rusko Drops "OMG!" on Mad Decent

There is little doubt that as far as America is concerned Dubstep has arrived. From sweaty, smoke-filled clubs in the U.K. the bass heavy, bastard child of garage, grime, & jungle has inexplicably caught the ears and hearts of anybody who happens to take a listen. The genre has it's godfathers (benga, kode9) and it's innovators (Burial, Skream) and now thanks to the Diplo backed, promotional juggernaut that is Mad Decent it seems that it has it's first American Superstar (I mean he's a superstar in America folks...Dudes a Bloody Brit through and through! pay attention). Rusko!
"OMG!" drops like a bomb on the DMZ! Scattering just about everything in it's path. The album has something for everyone. Rusko, born Chris Mercer, not just content to sit back and roll out grimey, sub bass, throb and gristle, cleans up his production and drops glittery, disco ball funk, rootsy dub and even plays with convention by adding southern hip hop icon Gucci Mane to the mix on "Got Da Groove." Oh don't worry, he doesn't disappoint the dubstep massive. Bass rollers abound. The man, alongside his partner Caspa, knows a thing or two about bass wobbles..."Woo Boost" is a dirty, mutated, chunk of the evil bass that simply screams anthem from beginning to end. But suddenly and seemingly without warning Rusko delivers a piece of 2-step, female vocal driven, club madness with "Hold On" featuring Dirty Projectors femme fatale, Amber Coffman.
But enough about the already leaked and over-blogged teaser tracks. The meat of the album is a fulfilling joyride from one end of Rusko's influences and interests to the other. The man eschews the played out, yet oh so trendy, auto-tune for significantly funkier and much more satisfyingly processed Roger Troutman-esque vocals on "You're On My Mind Baby," and "I Love You." Horns, ala "Sussudio" era Phil Collins, swirl their way through a retro eighties driven, synth drum, canyon and somehow end up falling into the earthshaking bass of "Dial My Number." Rusko has obviously been listening to the same soundtrack that Chromeo reintroduced to the world with "Fancy Footwork."
But Rusko doesn't stop there...oh no. "Kumon Kumon" and "Ravers Special" suddenly teleports back to the original hardcore (even before they were calling it jungle) rhythms of the early 90's rave scene. Sped up piano synths, female house vocals, and an amen break intact and waiting for whistles and air horns. Ok maybe the female house vocals were only in my head but I can totally hear them fitting into these tracks.
Rusko is about to be a household name with his recent production for M.I.A.'s latest album and there is little doubt that everyone is gonna have an opinion about the kid. So here is mine. "OMG!" is an astonishingly accomplished debut album from this kid from Leeds. It is the first but I'm quite certain it isn't the last. And I for one cannot wait for whats next!

Tampa hasn't seen an emcee (pardon me, femcee) like Dynasty before. It's a rare thing when an artist combines heartfelt storytelling, commanding stage presence, and a deep and palpable audience connection. The skills of Rah Digga, the soul of Lauren Hill, and the ruff neck swagger of MC Lyte. All appropriate descriptions for D.Y. It's easy to make comparisons when you start talking about female emcees. There are so few truly skilled women in hip hop. It's a boys club and as often as not, despite their talent, the girls have to tart themselves up and pander to an overactive and juvenile male fantasy just to get some attention (ahem...Lil Kim...cough cough Foxy Brown).

Quadron is a duo whose genesis originates from the reveries of two souls destined to live their existence as a fairytale. Our story begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, when Robin Hannibal encountered Coco O. thanks to the recommendation of a friend. Robin was already a name within Owusu & Hannibal, and Boom Clap Bachelors, but he was ready to continue his collaborations and also seek out new adventures.

In the ingénue of Coco, Robin saw a female muse, singing without effort, speaking in melody. Taking their time to get it right, they started playing together. A year would pass while they gently created the Quadron sound. The music was funky, naughty, soft and delicate, but complicated and natural. Robin creates melodies with lush orchestration and deep beats, intellectual and crisp. Coco layers them with her voluptuous timbre, together completing a chapter of their fairytale soundtrack until a Quadron song is born. Only a few months has passed since Quadron’s album was first exposted to the public, but the artistry of its caliber has a force all its own. When it’s good, it’s good and Quadron is that.

The Glitch Mob opted to drop the album on its own imprint, Glass Air, and has also given us the premiere of the album's first single, "Drive It Like You Stole It." If this track is anything, it's an anthem. Kirsten Dunst starred as a Cosplay girl in a music video singing a song called Turning Japanese. The video was produced by artist Takashi Murakami, and directed by McG who also directed that piece of shit movie, Terminator Salvation. Cosplay is short for costume play, and it’s huge in Japan (just like me).

The music video screened at a London show last fall called Pop Life: Art in a Material World.

De Masticatione Mortuorum, translated from Latin as “On the Chewing Dead,” is an aged manuscript written in 1679 by Philip Rohr. The 330-year-old text discusses a common fear of the time: that some human corpses were capable of rising from the dead and feasting on the flesh of the living.

The creatures described in Rohr’s book consume the bodies of live humans, not only the blood, differing slightly from the modern conception of the vampire. Nevertheless, De Masticatione Mortuorum has played a vital role in the evolution of the vast vampire mythology canon.

Below, a manuscript excerpt is translated from its original Latin to English.

De Masticatione Mortuorum

[Last line of second page:] Our Common People attempt to avert the danger of chewing by placing under the chins of the dead a portion of recently excavated earth, lest they perhaps open their mouths and chew on the attached bands...

[Continued – full first page:] Others, who do not consider this a sufficiently safe measure, before the mouth of the dead is closed, also place a stone and a coin in the mouth, so that in the event that it begins to chew within the grave, it would find the stone and coin and would abstain from chewing. Which fact was witnessed in its time in a multitude of places in Saxonia by Gabriel Rollenhagen: Book IV Mirab. Peregrinat chapter 20, n. 5 in Kornmann. Among the first to bring to light the latter custom of the people is the Excell. Garm. (de Mirac. Mort. manuscript page 28.). For they want the exhumed chewing cadavers to be punished by severing the heads, and for them to be transfixed through the middle of the body with stakes driven into the earth. Such was the fate that befell the above cadavers in the year 1345 and 1603, and lastly in the place mentioned. For such a remedy is indeed least approved by the intelligent, for it is morally, physically and politically evil. Morally inasmuch as one sins against God, who forbids [us] to act prejudicially against the dead; for it is indeed a kind of harm wrought to the dead, when they are exhumed, [avoiding which] the pestilential fluid might be prevented from spreading; one sins against the neighbor, whose reputation begins to decline when, having been dug up out of the grave, he is decapitated and transfixed with a stake. One falls into error, for none can benefit by this exhumation of the cadaver; inasmuch as (which are physical disadvantages) the nearby places may be filled with noxious vapors, and there takes place an increase of pestilence fomented by the Devil itself, who without doubt intends to achieve this end by means of the mastication. For which reason also the Theologians consulted by other experts regarding this evil gave their answers, lest anyone should presume to violate graves, and wanted them preserved intact and the cadavers to be unmolested.

“Me being me, I snatched the mic from him and he got off stage,” Ali posted to his Twitter. He quickly found out who the mystery dude was: Justin Timberlake. Apparently, Grammy-winning pop stars have more right than the average man to rock mics alongside the Brother: “I ran and grabbed him and he beatboxed while I freestyled for about 15 minutes,” Ali tweeted. Though the sound quality in the video clip below leaves something to be desired, the energy the odd pairing riled up is undeniable.”
