Rusko Drops "OMG!" on Mad Decent

There is little doubt that as far as America is concerned Dubstep has arrived. From sweaty, smoke-filled clubs in the U.K. the bass heavy, bastard child of garage, grime, & jungle has inexplicably caught the ears and hearts of anybody who happens to take a listen. The genre has it's godfathers (benga, kode9) and it's innovators (Burial, Skream) and now thanks to the Diplo backed, promotional juggernaut that is Mad Decent it seems that it has it's first American Superstar (I mean he's a superstar in America folks...Dudes a Bloody Brit through and through! pay attention). Rusko!
"OMG!" drops like a bomb on the DMZ! Scattering just about everything in it's path. The album has something for everyone. Rusko, born Chris Mercer, not just content to sit back and roll out grimey, sub bass, throb and gristle, cleans up his production and drops glittery, disco ball funk, rootsy dub and even plays with convention by adding southern hip hop icon Gucci Mane to the mix on "Got Da Groove." Oh don't worry, he doesn't disappoint the dubstep massive. Bass rollers abound. The man, alongside his partner Caspa, knows a thing or two about bass wobbles..."Woo Boost" is a dirty, mutated, chunk of the evil bass that simply screams anthem from beginning to end. But suddenly and seemingly without warning Rusko delivers a piece of 2-step, female vocal driven, club madness with "Hold On" featuring Dirty Projectors femme fatale, Amber Coffman.
But enough about the already leaked and over-blogged teaser tracks. The meat of the album is a fulfilling joyride from one end of Rusko's influences and interests to the other. The man eschews the played out, yet oh so trendy, auto-tune for significantly funkier and much more satisfyingly processed Roger Troutman-esque vocals on "You're On My Mind Baby," and "I Love You." Horns, ala "Sussudio" era Phil Collins, swirl their way through a retro eighties driven, synth drum, canyon and somehow end up falling into the earthshaking bass of "Dial My Number." Rusko has obviously been listening to the same soundtrack that Chromeo reintroduced to the world with "Fancy Footwork."
But Rusko doesn't stop there...oh no. "Kumon Kumon" and "Ravers Special" suddenly teleports back to the original hardcore (even before they were calling it jungle) rhythms of the early 90's rave scene. Sped up piano synths, female house vocals, and an amen break intact and waiting for whistles and air horns. Ok maybe the female house vocals were only in my head but I can totally hear them fitting into these tracks.
Rusko is about to be a household name with his recent production for M.I.A.'s latest album and there is little doubt that everyone is gonna have an opinion about the kid. So here is mine. "OMG!" is an astonishingly accomplished debut album from this kid from Leeds. It is the first but I'm quite certain it isn't the last. And I for one cannot wait for whats next!

Dynasty 2nd Single "Magnificent"

Tampa hasn't seen an emcee (pardon me, femcee) like Dynasty before. It's a rare thing when an artist combines heartfelt storytelling, commanding stage presence, and a deep and palpable audience connection. The skills of Rah Digga, the soul of Lauren Hill, and the ruff neck swagger of MC Lyte. All appropriate descriptions for D.Y. It's easy to make comparisons when you start talking about female emcees. There are so few truly skilled women in hip hop. It's a boys club and as often as not, despite their talent, the girls have to tart themselves up and pander to an overactive and juvenile male fantasy just to get some attention (ahem...Lil Kim...cough cough Foxy Brown).
Not this lady.
Dynasty has been slowly making a name for herself, turning heads locally and all over the world thanks to a co-sign from DJ Premier who put her last single "Femcee" on his "On the Road" mixtape. Her second single "Magnificent" released through Recordpushers Entertainment, may accelerate her journey into the spotlight. A little more soulful and a little less rough than "Femcee," "Magnificent" tells a story of transcendence, hope, and is universal in its themes. Stay tuned in for more from Dynasty and lookout for her debut album "Dream Pusher." The lady is very much an original, and she is "Magnificent!"

Quadron 'Quadron'

Quadron is a duo whose genesis originates from the reveries of two souls destined to live their existence as a fairytale. Our story begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, when Robin Hannibal encountered Coco O. thanks to the recommendation of a friend. Robin was already a name within Owusu & Hannibal, and Boom Clap Bachelors, but he was ready to continue his collaborations and also seek out new adventures.

In the ingénue of Coco, Robin saw a female muse, singing without effort, speaking in melody. Taking their time to get it right, they started playing together. A year would pass while they gently created the Quadron sound. The music was funky, naughty, soft and delicate, but complicated and natural. Robin creates melodies with lush orchestration and deep beats, intellectual and crisp. Coco layers them with her voluptuous timbre, together completing a chapter of their fairytale soundtrack until a Quadron song is born. Only a few months has passed since Quadron’s album was first exposted to the public, but the artistry of its caliber has a force all its own. When it’s good, it’s good and Quadron is that.

T.H.E.W.E.A.K. "17 again" video

T.H.E.W.E.A.K., comprised of MC rappers T Squared and Super Hero Supreme. T.H.E.W.E.A.K., (They. Hate. Everyone. With. Education. And. Knowledge), is a group with a direct and refreshing lyrical message which strives to “fight crime via the microphone” and to restore balance in and outside the Hip-Hop community.

T.H.E.W.E.A.K. create music that works towards the comprehension of Hip-Hop culture for both those who choose to accept it and those who struggle against it. Both T Squared and Super Hero Supreme believe that misconception and ignorance can turn to hate; it is from this hate thatT.H.E.W.E.A.K. have taken their name. T.H.E.W.E.A.K. can usually be caught prowling DC or Maryland streets looking for the “wicked and wack.”

DJ Center

“Everything in Time” is a global soul record bringing back a low-end theory and warmth that’s been absent in music as of late. It’s a record for a generation raised on a foundation of Hip Hop and Jazz, but having grown up with a global scope and broader musical palate. It’s Roots music without being Reggae, and Soul music without being a throw back to the past.

As the songs unfold on “Everything in Time” you’re enveloped in lush piano chords, warm bass lines, boom-bap drum patterns, flying tambourines, and soaring horns. The album includes a smoky cover of Rufus and Chaka Khan's anthem, “You Got the Love“ and culminates with the thumping Brazilian tribute titled, “Center's Groove”. The guests Center chose for his album are the perfect marriage to every song. The record features everyone from favorites like Oddisee and Zaki Ibrahim, to the up and coming Gretchen Parlato (who’s worked with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding) and Samia Farah (who’s dub reggae and jazz vocal styles give her an unparalleled uniqueness). The icing on the cake is the remix of “Tout Passe” contributed by the incredibly talented Waajeed of Platinum Pied Pipers.

The underlying essence of this record is timeless music. Each track is so unique from the next, yet housed under the same soulful roof. Listen unhurriedly, as all great things happen in time.

New Glitch Mob Single "Drive It Like You Stole It"

Together, edIT, Boreta, and Ooah have amassed a large number of remixes, singles, and mixtapes, but May 25 will mark the release of Drink the Sea, the debut full-length from LA's veteran blap collective. The Glitch Mob opted to drop the album on its own imprint, Glass Air, and has also given us the premiere of the album's first single, "Drive It Like You Stole It." If this track is anything, it's an anthem. Amidst a trademark head-nodding beat heavy with slap, a number of synths vie for the forefront position—like a team of buglers announcing the coming of the beat scene's heroes—before giving way to an arsenal of heavy percussion and reverberated vocal samples.

Takashi Murakame is an "S.A."!!!

but i don't think Kirsten Dunst is...

ok...so...
Kirsten Dunst starred as a Cosplay girl in a music video singing a song called Turning Japanese. The video was produced by artist Takashi Murakami, and directed by McG who also directed that piece of shit movie, Terminator Salvation. Cosplay is short for costume play, and it’s huge in Japan (just like me).

The music video screened at a London show last fall called Pop Life: Art in a Material World.

"On the Chewing Dead" – DE MASTICATIONE MORTUORUM

De Masticatione Mortuorum, translated from Latin as “On the Chewing Dead,” is an aged manuscript written in 1679 by Philip Rohr. The 330-year-old text discusses a common fear of the time: that some human corpses were capable of rising from the dead and feasting on the flesh of the living.

The creatures described in Rohr’s book consume the bodies of live humans, not only the blood, differing slightly from the modern conception of the vampire. Nevertheless, De Masticatione Mortuorum has played a vital role in the evolution of the vast vampire mythology canon.

Below, a manuscript excerpt is translated from its original Latin to English.

De Masticatione Mortuorum

[Last line of second page:] Our Common People attempt to avert the danger of chewing by placing under the chins of the dead a portion of recently excavated earth, lest they perhaps open their mouths and chew on the attached bands...

[Continued – full first page:] Others, who do not consider this a sufficiently safe measure, before the mouth of the dead is closed, also place a stone and a coin in the mouth, so that in the event that it begins to chew within the grave, it would find the stone and coin and would abstain from chewing. Which fact was witnessed in its time in a multitude of places in Saxonia by Gabriel Rollenhagen: Book IV Mirab. Peregrinat chapter 20, n. 5 in Kornmann. Among the first to bring to light the latter custom of the people is the Excell. Garm. (de Mirac. Mort. manuscript page 28.). Saying How well these follow Ethnic customs, for the Greeks (δανακήν) used to put a coin in the mouth of the dead, thereby paying Charon on behalf of those who were to cross the Stygian swamp. At this point you might say that these are prophylactic remedies of the common people, by which they think to prevent the evil before it falls upon them. For if they truly chew by the action itself of the dead, someone among us might try to drive a pin into them, but it would be a most unfortunate attempt. For they want the exhumed chewing cadavers to be punished by severing the heads, and for them to be transfixed through the middle of the body with stakes driven into the earth. Such was the fate that befell the above cadavers in the year 1345 and 1603, and lastly in the place mentioned. For such a remedy is indeed least approved by the intelligent, for it is morally, physically and politically evil. Morally inasmuch as one sins against God, who forbids [us] to act prejudicially against the dead; for it is indeed a kind of harm wrought to the dead, when they are exhumed, [avoiding which] the pestilential fluid might be prevented from spreading; one sins against the neighbor, whose reputation begins to decline when, having been dug up out of the grave, he is decapitated and transfixed with a stake. One falls into error, for none can benefit by this exhumation of the cadaver; inasmuch as (which are physical disadvantages) the nearby places may be filled with noxious vapors, and there takes place an increase of pestilence fomented by the Devil itself, who without doubt intends to achieve this end by means of the mastication. For which reason also the Theologians consulted by other experts regarding this evil gave their answers, lest anyone should presume to violate graves, and wanted them preserved intact and the cadavers to be unmolested.

Brother Ali & Justin Timberlake?!?!

from the twin cities AV Club site…“Jackson Hole, Wyoming’s Million Dollar Cowboy Bar’s first-ever hip-hop show certainly seems one to write home about: Hometown hero Brother Ali played the sold-out release party on Sunday for JH Snowboarder Magazine, when some dude in the crowd hopped on stage and started beatboxing.

“Me being me, I snatched the mic from him and he got off stage,” Ali posted to his Twitter. He quickly found out who the mystery dude was: Justin Timberlake. Apparently, Grammy-winning pop stars have more right than the average man to rock mics alongside the Brother: “I ran and grabbed him and he beatboxed while I freestyled for about 15 minutes,” Ali tweeted. Though the sound quality in the video clip below leaves something to be desired, the energy the odd pairing riled up is undeniable.”

Vincenzo Spitali's 'Splice'

This looks crazy!!! From the director of "Cube" comes this sci-fi mind-bender.

Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named "Dren", the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators - only to have that bond turn deadly.

Jack Splash is back!!!

He never really left. The man behind plantlife, the unarguable genesis of the falsetto soul funk revival popularized by pharell, Snoop, Cee-lo and other pop stars is finally puttin' it down for his again. I for one couldn't be happier. Jack Splash has been the quiet superstar behind a ton of tracks in pop music over the last couple years. He's now back to doin his own thing with the "technology and love might save us all" full length coming this spring on J Records. He is notoriously bad at keeping up to date on the internet (I don't think plantlife ever had a myspace or a website lol). But this guys music is undeniably the future and unrepentantly iconoclastic. Equal parts funk and electronics, sweaty soul and cool computer. "King Of the Beats Vol. 1" is the first taste to get the world ready for the album. It drops this week and if you have any funk in your soul you'll pick it up.

DJ Lazy's 60 favorite songs of 2009

yeah I'm sure I've forgotten some or neglected others or whatever but hey, it's a list, whattaya want outta me?! :-P
I tried to keep it down to one artist, one song. Otherwise I mighta added a few more B.C. tracks from his debut solo EP "Time Pieces." The same can be said for Lady Sovereign, Pantyraid, ellie goulding, la roux, Awol One & Factor, Blue Scholars etc. That leads me to my next task which will be a listing of my favorite albums of '09, hopefully coming soon. This was also a big dubstep year for me. So there are some producer repeats in here. I didn't include a few pervasive pop songs. Not because I didn't enjoy them (lady gaga) but just because they are already so ubiquitous that they don't need my little list for some kinda affirmation. Once again my decisions are subjective and arbitrary...sue me :-)
Oh yeah, just to be clear, this listing is in no particular order but very probably the top of the list is ranked higher than the bottom. Then again some got added in late that I remembered and I probably would rank them higher than some above them. The La Roux track is my fave of '09 though...

B.C. Drops "Time Pieces pt 1 Time Capsule" EP Oct. 13

Combining complex metaphor, time travel, scintillating lyrical gymnastics, anime, radical politics and an apocryphal-dystopian comic book aesthetic, Red Tide member and Florida MC, BC, The Black Child, delivers his solo debut, the first of a three part conceptual album, "Time Pieces."
"Time Pieces" is a temporal travelogue, a sonic cultural history, and a riveting manifesto about Pop World, told by a dark messenger from the future, stranded in time, and compelled to deliver a grim warning about what is coming. From the fetid gutters of the ruined surface to the gleaming hover cars of the elite class, nothing has escaped the singular vision of the chrono-archeologist. But can his frantic, coded messages be delivered and translated in time? Like a stone skipping across the pond of history each warning ripples out, sometimes scrambled, often difficult to decipher. A harbinger, without a home, out of time, can his message be heard...

The concept for "Time Pieces" has been incubating in the rhyme book of BC for some time now. Its first chapter, "Time Capsule" finally came to fruition this year (2009) in a time when it couldn't be more relevant. "Time Capsule" serves as the skeleton for BC's imaginary Pop World which will be fleshed out in chapters 2 and 3, "The Surface" and "The Sky." The production on "Time Capsule" was mainly done by a cast of collaborators from BC's home town of Tampa, Florida. Mudd Buddha, Vincent Saletto, and Red Tide member Lazy all contributed to the tracks that give the EP its otherworldly sound. Lyrically the EP features strong cameos by former Florida MC Surreal (Surreal and the Sound Providers) and Red Tide founding member, Skoolz; however, its most outstanding feature is on the song "Ode to Gil Scott-Heron" on which poet/MC Saul Williams delivers a powerful second verse. Other outstanding tracks include "This is Not a Song," with its fast paced delivery combined with social commentary, and "Pop World" the eerie vision of BC's future planet. "Time Pieces” Pt. 1 “Time Capsule" releases on Peripheral Records, October 13, 2009. It will be available digitally through Domination Records, CD Baby, ITunes, Amazon, and most other digital outlets. CDs will be available through www.thepopworld.com.
Stay tuned for remixes from: B.Rich, Thavius Beck, Mum's the Word, Mochipet, Aetoms, Bomarr, Matt B, & Soultech

Jern Eye "Blowin' Up" ft Roc C & Nightclubber Lang

It's a transcontinental joint that caps off Jern Eye's upcoming release, "Vision," as the Oakland-based emcee grabs a classic Notorious B.I.G. sample for the hook. World famous DJ Vinroc, who serves as a part of crews Triple Threat and 5th Platoon, steps in on the production side laying a strong foundation for Jern Eye to celebrate the long struggle of a career that has lead up to this, his forthcoming sophomore solo album, "Vision." Guest emcees Roc C and Nightclubber Lang of The Boom Bap Project drop verses that recognize their similar experiences, and for Jern Eye the song serves as a great opportunity to work with the two fellow emcees on his album. Check out this and the first fourteen tracks of "Vision," out October 13 via MYX Music Label.

DJ Class "I'm The Shit" Video

This reminds me of the old Juvenile video when he first blew up. Just a raw representation of B-more. I dig it!

!llmind Releases Official Remix Album

While some lucky fans were able to snag a free copy at select Rock The Bells, MYX Music Label, 2dopeboyz, NahRight, OkayPlayer, Audible Treats , and Kicks-n-Jams are pleased to finally present !llmind's Official Remix Album. No stranger to making head nodding production, !llmind's latest effort showcases how he can flip any song and still shine as if he was the original producer. The official remix album is mixed by DJ Icewater (of The Pharcyde) and boasts 18 exclusive remixes featuring an eclectic array of artists from Common, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, The Roots, and Masta Ace to John Legend, Slum Village, and many more. Also included are four exclusive tracks from !llmind's own group, Fortilive (!llmind, Slo-Mo, and Mushmouf).

Musically, !llmind's Official Remix Album works perfectly to display the producer's skills. Each song smoothly transitions into the next while showcasing !llmind's ability to span a wide variety of musical genres. Common's "I Want You Remix" navigates from a scratch heavy intro to a melodic chorus with congas and guitar licks rounding out the beat, while the stabbing bassline and in-the-pocket drum programming of John Legend's "Ordinary People Remix" undoubtedly brings up J-Dilla nostalgia. While the The Official Remix Album features a number of mainstream aritsts, !llmind makes sure not to stray too far from hip-hop's roots, including the "Conflict Remix," featuring rhyme veterans Masta Ace and Guru of seminal rap group Gangstarr. The album ends with a bang - four bangs to be exact - as !llmind premiers a series of exclusive Fortilive tracks in anticipation of their forthcoming 2010-scheduled debut album.
