The King is Dead, Long Live The King

Yep, Michael Jackson, The King Of Pop, has died. I am surprised to admit that I was actually choked up when I found out. I was at the gym on a treadmill, minding my own business and listening to the DNAE Beats Mixtape "There's a Wormhole In My Bathroom." As the news came in across the multiple television screens lined up in front of the workout machines I realized that my pulse had risen for a reason that had nothing to do with a cardio workout. I had to brush away tears. In that room full of testosterone I was grateful to be sweating so as not to appear soft in front of the Golds Gymrats. I've always considered myself more of a Prince fan than a Michael fan and generally identified with all things NOT pop throughout the 80's. But there is no doubt that Jackson and his family have had an idelible impact on American culture and, as such, have quietly made an impact on my life that I wasn't entirely aware of until the moment that he passed away. Perhaps it's my age or the recent birth of my first child but I couldn't help but think of my own mortality. This man was a cultural icon before I was born and remained one, despite all the sublime and horrifying elements of his personal life, right up until the day that he died. He had a Disney ride for God's sake!! Rest In Peace Michael Jackson. There will never be another like you.

Slaughterhouse's Self Titled Debut Album Drops August 11th

Check out this new track by my new favorite super group!
SLAUGHTERHOUSE (Joe Budden, Royce Da 5'9", Joell Ortiz and Crooked I).
So if you know me just a little you know that Royce Da 5'9" is one of my favorite emcees. Dude just flows nice on everything he ever touches. Same can be said about Joell Ortiz who has been on my radar for a looong time. Just those two cats alone are what I wish Hip Hop stood behind in the oh nine. Complex rhymes schemes, legitimate and cohesive freestyle ability, storytelling, battle rhyming, and just all around confidence and mic control. Prototypical emcees...to me anyway. Same can be said from a West Coast perspective about Crooked I. Flow, battle skills, swagger. Notice that nobody ever really steps to these cats with anything but respect. Then in comes Joe Budden who is the wild card in the group. Dude can and will say anything with a microphone in front of him. It seems to get him into a lotta hot water but he can also back it up with ferocious skills.
"Woodstock Hood Hop" produced by Nottz and featuring MOP is what I got for you.
Look out for Slaughterhouse on this summer's Rock The Bells Tour.
Also check out their self titled LP "SLAUGHTERHOUSE"
dropping August 11th on Slaughterhouse/ Koch Records.

Cookbook Drops "I Love The 80's" For Free!!

Cali-based emcee and producer Jason Soto aka CookBook is proud to announce his newest release and romp through the past, "I Love the 80's". CookBook weaves movie references, synthesizers, techno dance sounds—alotta the greatest elements of the 80s—to create a celebration of a time known for aerobics and “The Breakfast Club.” Believe me when I tell ya that you're gonna recognize the tracks and samples. (Probably the reason that this is being given away for free if you ask me.)

Most people know CookBook as a member of the super rap collective LA Symphony. In 1999, the group’s critically acclaimed debut album, "Composition No. 1," thrust them into the national spotlight. Since then, they’ve released five full-lengths, and two EPs. The last release they had was "Unleashed" in 2007. And though the group is still together, CookBook and fellow LAS member UNO Mas have been busy in the studio working on several projects of their own.

"I Love the 80's" is far less a thug-homage to the decade than Prodigy’s recent "Product of the 80s"…CookBook’s style is lighter and quirkier, and the rhymes effortlessly weave in and out of 80s nostalgia. With tracks like “Die Hard,” “Molly Ringwald,” “Inner Space,” and “Growing Pains”, Cookbook uses colorful 80s-inspired samples and clever rhymes to successfully declare his love for the 80s. Slap on your neon and jogging suits, lace up your Reeboks, and get ready for a trip back in time—CookBook style! For fans of Pigeon John, the 80's, and good hip hop!!

The real dope thing about this release is that Cookbook is giving the whole thing to you for FREE!!!

sphereofhiphop.com has "I Love The 80's" available for free download right now. Go over there and check out this record! Do this IMMEDIATELY!!! Tell 'em kicks-n-jams and DJ lazy sent ya!

Keelay and Zaire Video F/ Nightclubber Lang

This video for the track "Slick Talk" off Keelay & Zaire's "Prelude To Drive" features cameos from Kee & Zee in the flesh, but the star of the picture is industry veteran known to some as Nightclubber Lang of The Boom Bap Project, and known to others as Karim Panni, founder of MYX Music Label. The video showcases the three at spots all around New York City, with backdrops of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, underground scenes at the 57th street subway stop, and visits to local record stores as Nightclubber spits his slick talkin' rhymes.

The Movie isn't due until March 2010 but these photos that were just released have me ready to line up for a ticket right now! That Helena Bonham Carter pic is just eerie.

Trick Love Da Kids!!! "This The Shit that I Live" single

I don't care what people think. I've always been down with Trick Daddy. I was the only white boy in the club when he came to Sarasota and a riot popped off during his set. Cats were jumping over the bar and grabbing the cash registers! Even before all that happened he was a real cool guy. Took time to chat with me in the DJ booth and was just basically a really down to earth kinda person. This was before "You Don't Know Nann," before mainstream fame really hit him. He was just a hood star with huge street cred and in my opinion he still carries himself that way. To me "Dro in The Wind" with Cee-lo is still a summertime Florida anthem. And my favorite, blow the club up, track of all time from him is (of course) "Let's Go" ft Lil John and Twista. So here is his brand new single "This The Shit That I live" off the new album "Finally Famous" so rock that shit!!!!

These sneakers feature a mix of synthetic and leather uppers with a distinctive bamboo textured leather saddle and mesh toebox/outer collar. The color pops on the mid-sole complete the form. Major Lazer "Guns Don't Kill People" Album Drops June 16

Major Lazer is set to drop "Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do" on the world Tuesday June 16th. Here is a little preview and some links to the label Downtown Records and a spot where you can pick up a limited edition t-shirt collabo between OBEY & MAD DECENT! I really like the Lehtmojoe remix of "hold the line" (with the dope Toto sample!!)

Download: "hold the line" lehtmojoe rmx

Major Lazer is a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984. The US military rescued him and repurposed ... experimental lazers as prosthetic limbs. Since then Major Lazer has been a hired renegade soldier for a rogue government operating in secrecy underneath the watch of M5 and the CIA. His cover is that of a dancehall night club owner from Trinidad and he enlisted the help of long-time allies and uber-producers, Diplo and Switch, to produce his first LP. His true mission is to protect the world from the dark forces of evil that live just under the surface of a civilized society. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket powered skateboard.
As part of a plan to subdue the forces of evil with a batch of futuristic dancehall bangers, the three encamped at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica to record the Major Lazer record. The product of this collaboration is Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do, a collection of tracks that draws from the rich dancehall tradition of Jamaica, the futuristic dance-floor-killing aesthetic of Diplo and Switch, and contributions from some of the biggest names in dancehall today. The record runs global pop culture through the filter of Major Lazer’s particular brand of 80’s-inspired digital dancehall, at once an homage to a bygone era and a look to the future of dance music.

Diplo (Philadelphia-based DJ and producer Wesley Pentz), incorporates such disparate influences as Miami Bass and Baile Funk into the high-tech ecclecticism of his productions. Known for his forward-thinking productions for MIA, Bonde Do Role and many others, and for the solo LP of cinematic, sample-based hip hop entitled Florida he recorded for the Ninja Tune imprint. Diplo is also the founder and owner of Mad Decent records, which has put out records by DJ Blaqstarr and Bonde do Role.

Switch (the pseudonym of British producer and DJ Dave Taylor) is the owner of one of the most progressive and respected underground dance music labels around, Dubsided. His work as producer is revered by critics, emulated by his fellow DJs, and sweated hard by dance floors on both sides of the Atlantic. Switch also permanently endeared himself to the bespectacled music cogniscenti with his contribution to Santigold’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut.

Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do comes out on Downtown Records on June 16th, 2009.

New Balance MTG580 Gore-Tex Gradient Pack

New Balance preview an upcoming release from their Summer 2009 Collection featuring one of their more popular platforms, in the MTG580. The kicks combine the companies commitment to quality, comfort, and technical details with the implementation of a water-proof Gore-Tex liner amongst various material choices. Two gradient colorways, including a black/white and pink/yellow, look to release soon at New Balance retailers. These shoes are quite simply amazing. The gradient blasts the already dope gore-tex concept out into the stratosphere. I am gonna be tracking both colorways down. Just look at how the gradient is included on all parts of the sneaker (all the way down to the laces!!)

FSD x Timbuck2 x The Cool Kids - The Fake Shore Drive Mixtape

This mixtape is literally chock full of new and unreleased music from artists that we have been playing on Hip Hop Flavors for the last couple of years. I gotta admit that I never woulda bet on the mainstream popularity of this stuff when I first started rockin' it on the show. I guess Kanye has one more thing to gas up his ego because none of these cats would have half the exposure that they do if not for him.
