The Fool's Gold 10,00 LB HamburgerTour came through last night. Good Times! Sometimes I wonder about Tampa though. Because in my head this show shoulda been absolutely jam packed to the rafters with people. It wasn't and that is more an indictment of Tampa than it is of the performers because despite the absence of Rye Rye, who I was really stoked to see, Treasure Fingers (from ATL) and A-trak absolutely killed it! The dude is pretty fresh. I remember his verses from when he was in Screwball back in the day (I gotta dig those 12"s outta the record crate now haha!). Old School NY Boom Bap style throughout but it's DJ Premier so you know it's official. Blaq Poet has been leaking tracks for a couple months ("ain't nuttin changed," "hate") and now the full length is finally out. "The Blaqprint" dropped on Tuesday and despite the derivative title it's worth a listen.

Rye Rye is comin to Crowbar in tampa this weekend!!

It's been two years since barely-legal Baltimore babe Rye Rye and DJ Blaqstarr released the video clip for “Shake it to the Ground.” Her long-awaited first official solo single, a breakbeat-fueled B-More Club banger titled “Bang,” has been out for a few months now, and a club-themed video for the track has finally surfaced!

“Bang,” which was produced by her mentor Blaqstarr and features guest-vocals from her other mentor M.I.A., is out now and available in a number of diverse formats from retailers everywhere. It's the first single from her forthcoming debut album, due out any time now on M.I.A.'s own N.E.E.T. Records label, distributed by Interscope.

New Balance presents some interesting styles for Spring/Summer 2010, both in terms of colors and in terms of materials. The New Balance 150 comes in some great looks next year, especially interesting for people that like it a little more colorful. Royce Da 5'9"

Here is a new track while Royce preps the release of his highly-anticipated “Street Hop” LP, (due out on September 22nd), executive-produced by DJ Premier. That release has already generated overwhelming critical accolades alone with the release of street-singles “Shake This” and “Part Of Me” and the forthcoming self-titled debut LP from Bi-Coastal conglomerate Slaughterhouse (Royce 5’9, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz & Crooked I) on this summer.

The King is Dead, Long Live The King

Yep, Michael Jackson, The King Of Pop, has died. I am surprised to admit that I was actually choked up when I found out. I was at the gym on a treadmill, minding my own business and listening to the DNAE Beats Mixtape "There's a Wormhole In My Bathroom." As the news came in across the multiple television screens lined up in front of the workout machines I realized that my pulse had risen for a reason that had nothing to do with a cardio workout. I had to brush away tears. In that room full of testosterone I was grateful to be sweating so as not to appear soft in front of the Golds Gymrats. I've always considered myself more of a Prince fan than a Michael fan and generally identified with all things NOT pop throughout the 80's. But there is no doubt that Jackson and his family have had an idelible impact on American culture and, as such, have quietly made an impact on my life that I wasn't entirely aware of until the moment that he passed away. Perhaps it's my age or the recent birth of my first child but I couldn't help but think of my own mortality. This man was a cultural icon before I was born and remained one, despite all the sublime and horrifying elements of his personal life, right up until the day that he died. He had a Disney ride for God's sake!! Rest In Peace Michael Jackson. There will never be another like you.

So if you know me just a little you know that Royce Da 5'9" is one of my favorite emcees. Dude just flows nice on everything he ever touches. Same can be said about Joell Ortiz who has been on my radar for a looong time. Just those two cats alone are what I wish Hip Hop stood behind in the oh nine. Complex rhymes schemes, legitimate and cohesive freestyle ability, storytelling, battle rhyming, and just all around confidence and mic control. Prototypical emcees...to me anyway. Same can be said from a West Coast perspective about Crooked I. Flow, battle skills, swagger. Notice that nobody ever really steps to these cats with anything but respect. Then in comes Joe Budden who is the wild card in the group. Dude can and will say anything with a microphone in front of him. It seems to get him into a lotta hot water but he can also back it up with ferocious skills.

Keelay and Zaire Video F/ Nightclubber Lang

This video for the track "Slick Talk" off Keelay & Zaire's "Prelude To Drive" features cameos from Kee & Zee in the flesh, but the star of the picture is industry veteran known to some as Nightclubber Lang of The Boom Bap Project, and known to others as Karim Panni, founder of MYX Music Label. Trick Love Da Kids!!! "This The Shit that I Live" single

I don't care what people think. I've always been down with Trick Daddy. I was the only white boy in the club when he came to Sarasota and a riot popped off during his set. Cats were jumping over the bar and grabbing the cash registers! Even before all that happened he was a real cool guy. Took time to chat with me in the DJ booth and was just basically a really down to earth kinda person. This was before "You Don't Know Nann," before mainstream fame really hit him. He was just a hood star with huge street cred and in my opinion he still carries himself that way. To me "Dro in The Wind" with Cee-lo is still a summertime Florida anthem. And my favorite, blow the club up, track of all time from him is (of course) "Let's Go" ft Lil John and Twista. Major Lazer is a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984. The US military rescued him and repurposed ... experimental lazers as prosthetic limbs. Since then Major Lazer has been a hired renegade soldier for a rogue government operating in secrecy underneath the watch of M5 and the CIA. His cover is that of a dancehall night club owner from Trinidad and he enlisted the help of long-time allies and uber-producers, Diplo and Switch, to produce his first LP. His true mission is to protect the world from the dark forces of evil that live just under the surface of a civilized society. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket powered skateboard.
As part of a plan to subdue the forces of evil with a batch of futuristic dancehall bangers, the three encamped at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica to record the Major Lazer record. The product of this collaboration is Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do, a collection of tracks that draws from the rich dancehall tradition of Jamaica, the futuristic dance-floor-killing aesthetic of Diplo and Switch, and contributions from some of the biggest names in dancehall today. Known for his forward-thinking productions for MIA, Bonde Do Role and many others, and for the solo LP of cinematic, sample-based hip hop entitled Florida he recorded for the Ninja Tune imprint. Diplo is also the founder and owner of Mad Decent records, which has put out records by DJ Blaqstarr and Bonde do Role.

Switch (the pseudonym of British producer and DJ Dave Taylor) is the owner of one of the most progressive and respected underground dance music labels around, Dubsided. His work as producer is revered by critics, emulated by his fellow DJs, and sweated hard by dance floors on both sides of the Atlantic. Switch also permanently endeared himself to the bespectacled music cogniscenti with his contribution to Santigold’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut.

This mixtape is literally chock full of new and unreleased music from artists that we have been playing on Hip Hop Flavors for the last couple of years. I gotta admit that I never woulda bet on the mainstream popularity of this stuff when I first started rockin' it on the show. I guess Kanye has one more thing to gas up his ego because none of these cats would have half the exposure that they do if not for him.
